The Two Queens of Firixina is my first Dalia Davies book. The tentacles drew me in (Sapphic? Tentacles? GIMME!!!) and I’m deeply impressed by the world-building and sense of history between the two main characters. And that this gives me sapphic Romeo and Juliet vibes is absolute *chef’s kiss*.

My Review:
Ahhhhhhhh!!! I really enjoyed The Two Queens of Firixina. When I dig into an alien story, I want all the details about the alien world and bodies that differ from human bodies. Dalia Davies did such an excellent job with that. I could have read a full-length novel set in this world.
Ixi is the Icarian queen. She has blue skin, razor-sharp fingernails, and carries Zarian metal blades—designed to kill Shadows. But she has a secret. She’s supposed to hate all Shadows, but there’s one she loves.
Shlyx Frxn, or Shallon, as Ixi calls her, was raised to hate the Icarians. But she had to see for herself. Ixi is not what she expected, and it’s clear these two have had a beautiful past where enemies became friends and then lovers before being separated by duty. I love that Shadows are shapeshifters and can take on any shape. That detail really accentuated the “otherness” within the story, especially when Shallon needs to form lips so she can kiss Ixi.
The steamy moments were spectacular because of the interesting, irregular anatomy. This is probably the most fascinating spicy romance I’ve ever read, and I loved every moment. That Ixi knows exactly what to do with Shallon’s body suggests just how much time these two once spent getting to know each other, inside and out. There’s such a strong sense of longing between Ixi and Shallon, and Davies has beautifully woven in their backstory during their one night to put things right.
If you love alien worlds and interesting anatomy, check this one out.
